Piedmont

Overview

With the highest percentage of DOC/DOCG of any region, Piedmont (so named because of it is located in the foothills of the Alps) is considered one of the most important wine regions in Italy in terms of quality. Incredibly mountainous, every vineyard has a unique aspect, slope, mesoclimate and soil composition that enters into the character of the wine produced from that location. Less than 5% of the vineyards are officially classified as flat. Comparisons are often made to Burgundy concerning the myriad differences in wines made in adjacent vineyards.

The major wines of Piedmont are Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto, Brachetto d’Acqui, Gavi, Arneis and Asti.
