Overview
Located in the center of the Loire, the Touraine region mainly produces Chenin Blanc for white and Cabernet Franc for red. The soils vary from gravel to chalk, schist, slate, granite and volcanic earth.
Some of the more famous AOCs in Touraine are are: Chinon, Bourgueil, and Vouvray. It is important to note that Bourgueil AOC does not produce anything but red and rose wine and Vouvray AOC can only be chenin blanc. Chinon also produces a significant amount of Cabernet Franc.
It is also important to understand the difference between Cheverny, which produces fresh whites made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and/or Chardonnay, and Cour-Chevery, which produces white wine made from Romoratin.
