Cote d'Or

Overview

Consisting of the Cote de Nuits to the north and the Cote de Beaune to the south. Pinot Noir is the primary red grape. Chardonnay is the primary white grape. Many of the villages have, as a suffix, the name of their most famous vineyard. Due to the laws of French inheritance, saying that each child was to receive an equal share of the vineyard instead of the eldest son, alone, many of the estates are quite small, with some just owning a row or two of vines. Grand Cru is the highest designation, followed by Premier Cru, then the wine of a specific village (Meursault).
