New South Wales

Overview

The first grape vines in Australia were planted in New South Wales when European settlers arrived in the late 1700’s. This warm state is located on Australia’s east coast and has a diverse range of climates from coastal to Alpine.

Its most famed regions are the Hunter Valley region, located near the coast north of Sydney and Mudgee, located inland on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. Orange, is a cooler area within New South Wales that is relatively new, with its first commercial plantings in the 1980s, and focused on small, high-end production. Murray Darling and Riverina are large, dry, regions where irrigation is necessary.
