During August, nine-liter spirits case sales in the control states were up 9.4% compared to same month last year sales. Rolling-twelve month volumes grew 4.4%, up from July's 4.1%. Alabama, Idaho, Montgomery County Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia reported growth rates at, or exceeding, their twelve month trends.

Control state spirits shelf dollars were up 13.2% during August while trending at 6.9% during the past twelve months. Alabama, Idaho, Montgomery County Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia reported growth rates at, or exceeding, their twelve month trends.  

Price/Mix for August was 3.8%, dwarfing July's 2.7%.

Michigan, with 16% of the Control States' spirits and dollars volume, reported five weeks of sales this year against four weeks last year, which artificially inflates sales and skews Control States results. In Michigan there were seven more selling days - 25% more - during this year's August. Note: During August, 2011, Utah, with 2% of Control State spirits volume, reported five weeks of sales against four weeks during the previous year. The growth rate reported for Control State volume during August, 2011, the month against which August, 2012, is compared, was a robust, artificially inflated, 6.3%.

The August, 2012, calendar has five Fridays compared to four Fridays last year. A Monday and Tuesday in the August, 2011, calendar are replaced with a Thursday and Friday in this year's calendar. On Average, 21% of weekly sales are reported on Monday and Tuesday compared with 37% reported on Thursday and Friday.

During August, Irish Whiskey, with 0.8% share of the control states spirits market, was the fastest growing category with 27.3% reported and a twelve month trend of 19.7%. Vodka, with 35% share, grew during the same periods at 11.4% and 6.7%. Growth rates reported for Brandy/Cognac, Canadian Whiskey, Cordials, Domestic Whiskey, Gin, Irish Whiskey, Rum, Scotch, Tequila, and Vodka exceeded their twelve-month trends.

August's nine-liter wine case sales grew at 4.3%. Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Utah, Mississippi, Montgomery County Maryland, and Wyoming reported 5.1%, 3.0%, 5.4%, -1.4%, 7.4%, and 0.8%, respectively. August's rolling-twelve month wine volume growth, 4.3%, is nearly flat with July's 4.5%.
